Terms of admission
The matura certificate is the main means of access to a cantonal university or a Federal Institute of Technology. In 2007 / 2008, 94% of all new students held a matura certificate.
Admission
The respective university determines the specific terms of admission. A fundamental condition for admission is the possession of a matura certificate or an equivalent certificate, as well as proficiency in the language of study.
At study programmes in medicine in German-speaking Switzerland, the restriction of enrolment numbers by means of admission tests has been introduced due to the large number of students wishing to enrol.
Passerelle
According to the Passerelle Regulation (regulation on the recognition of vocational baccalaureate certificates for admission to universities), holders of a federal vocational baccalaureate may also be admitted to a university by passing an additional examination.
Alternative admission
Certain universities allow alternative admission procedures for those who do not meet the afore-mentioned terms of admission, whereby a certain age, professional experience, a written application and an additional aptitude test may be required.
