In the autumn semester of 2007 / 2008, a total of 60,809 students were registered at the universities of applied sciences including the universities of teacher education. Of these, 47.9% were women and 15.3% were foreign students. In 2007 / 2008, new students constituted 17% of their age group in Switzerland.

Bologna

The introduction of the 2-tier Bologna study system is proceeding rapidly in the universities of applied sciences: after initial introduction in the autumn semester of 2005 / 2006, 90% of all students in the autumn semester of 2007 / 2008 commenced a Bachelor course. In the autumn semester of 2007 / 2008, a total of 1261 students were taking a Master course. With the exception of a few fields of study, for which it was possible to introduce the Master courses even earlier, most Master courses were introduced in the autumn semester of 2008 / 2009.

In the year 2007, a total of 9649 students obtained a previous university of applied sciences degree, 1874 obtained a Bachelor's degree and 218 a Master's degree. About half of the university of applied sciences degrees went to students from the fields of business, management and services, or engineering and information technology (IT). In 2007, individuals who acquired a qualification from a university of applied sciences constituted 12% of their age group in Switzerland.
