In the school year 2007 / 2008, the approximately 60 specialised middle schools were attended by 15,060 pupils. The specialised middle school courses were primarily attended by female students (74.7%). The proportion of foreign students was 19.3%. 7.9% of the students attended private, unsubsidised specialised middle schools. In 2007, a total of 3600 specialised middle school certificates were obtained.
The cantons determine the number of hours per week. The students received tuition in 32 to 36 lessons per week (lesson duration usually 45 minutes).
