The number of students at matura schools has risen in the last 10 years. More than 54,000 students attended a matura school in 1990; by 2007 / 2008, the number had risen to 71,958 (56.4% female). 13.3% of the students had a foreign background. The percentage of students attending private, unsubsidised matura schools was 8%. 19% of young people (measured in the 20-year-old age group) possessed a matura certificate. In 2007, a total of 17,461 matura certificates were issued. More than half of these were issued to women (58.1%).

The cantons specify the number of hours per week according to the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education's Regulations on the Recognition of Matura Certificates. Most students received tuition in 33 to 37 lessons per week (lesson duration usually 45 minutes).
