In the academic year 2007 / 2008, a total of 11,950 students attended a university of teacher education (all courses, including the field of special needs education). The majority of students were women (76.6%) and the proportion of foreign students was 6.1%. The largest number of students attended courses in teaching at the pre-school / primary level (6120), followed by courses in teaching at lower secondary level (3038) and special needs education (1216).

In the academic year 2007 / 2008, a total of 3550 students commenced a new course of study. The normal admission requirement for studies leading to teacher qualification at a university of teacher education is a matura certificate, which 70% of the students who enrolled at a university of teacher education possessed. In 2007, a total of 839 people (63.2% women) acquired a qualification at a university of teacher education.

In 2006 / 2007, 99% of the students completing a course in teaching at pre-school or primary level commenced a Bachelor course. In the same academic year, 45% of the students completing courses in teaching at lower secondary level completed a Bachelor course which is followed by a consecutive Master course. As a result of the changeover to the 2-tier study system in accordance with the Bologna Declaration, the graduates received not only the teaching qualification, but also a Bachelor's or Master's degree. In 2007, a total of 1866 people (85.5% women) acquired a Bachelor's degree and 187 people (81.8% women) acquired a Master's degree. There were still 839 people (63.2% women) who acquired a teaching qualification according to the previous system, without a corresponding academic degree (Bachelor's or Master's).
