Performance is assessed with grades, or half-grades, from 1 to 6 (6 = best grade, 4 = sufficient, below 4 = insufficient). At the end of the semester, a graded report is issued. Learning reports are seldom used. Work attitude or motivation may be assessed. In some schools, the pupils also conduct self-assessment.

Transfer into the next class

Promotion to the next class is based on the pupil's achievements during the scholastic year. These must attain at least an average of grade 4. A defined maximum number of insufficient grades may not be exceeded. Generally, the teachers' conference decides on transfer to the next class.

Final examination

At least 6 subjects are tested for the initial certificate (specialised middle school certificate). At least 1 of these, but not more than 2, must be vocationally oriented. Depending on the subject, the examination is either oral, written, or both written and oral. In the examination subjects, the performance during the final year of schooling and the results of the examination carry equal weighting. In the remainder of the subjects, the performance during the final year of schooling is applicable.

The specialised middle school certificate also requires the completion and presentation of an independent assignment. This is performed prior to the final examination.

The students graduate with the specialised middle school certificate.

For the specialised matura, additional requirements must be performed in the selected vocational field in accordance with the Regulations on the Recognition of Certificates from Specialised Middle Schools and the corresponding guidelines from the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education (EDK). An additional specialised matura assignment in a selected vocational field must be completed and presented either in writing or orally.

The students graduate with a specialised matura certificate.

The certificates of specialised middle school education and specialised matura education are recognised throughout Switzerland.
