Course contents
The 10 cantonal universities and the 2 Federal Institutes of Technology conduct teaching as well as research and offer a wide range of courses of study, in the following fields: theology and religious studies, law and criminology, economics and political science, medicine, pharmacy and health, social sciences and social work, linguistics and literature studies, communication and information, history and archaeology, humanities and art history, natural sciences and mathematics, computer science and telecommunication, sports sciences and human movement. There are also possibilities for cross-faculty studies, such as inter-disciplinary study programmes (e.g. in social sciences, communication studies and gender studies).
Fields of study
There is specialisation and concentration in different fields of study:

Medicine study programmes exist at the Universities of Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich. Fribourg and Neuchâtel only offer the propaedeutic courses.

The University of St. Gallen specialises in economics, law and cultural studies.

The University of Lugano focuses on architecture, computer science, economics and communication studies.

The University of Lucerne focuses on theology, cultural studies, social sciences and law.

Mathematics, natural sciences, engineering, architecture, computer science and telecommunications are the core disciplines at the 2 Federal Institutes of Technology in Zurich and Lausanne.
