Matura schools: What requirements are set?

Teachers conduct tests during the entire Matura school education. As a rule, grades from 1 to 6 (6 = the best grade) are used for the evaluation of achievements. Learning progress reports are not customary at Matura schools.

Transfer
Transfer to the next semester, or rather, the next class occurs on the basis of achievements realized (the total average must be at least a grade of 4, a specific maximum number of unsatisfactory grades may not be exceeded).

Matura assignment
The pupils must develop and present a larger assignment that they have prepared themselves. The Matura assignment is usually handled in the penultimate or final year of the Matura school tuition, over a period of 10 to 18 months. The Matura assignment is assessed on the basis of the written work and an oral presentation.

Matura examination
At the end of the education, a written Matura examination, which may also be supplemented by an oral examination, is held in at least five Matura subjects. The examination subjects are the first language, a second national language, mathematics, the in-depth subject, and a further subject. For the remaining subjects, the grades achieved in the last year of education in which the subject was taught are applicable.

Private schools, alternative access to Matura
Adolescents or adults who attend private Matura preparatory schools that are not recognised by the Confederation or the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education (EDK) must sit the Matura exam at Swiss federal level.
