Matura schools: What is taught?
 
The educational goal of the Matura schools is to teach the pupils fundamental knowledge with the view towards life long learning, as well as to encourage intellectual open-mindedness and the ability to judge for themselves. Personal maturity is a precondition to be able to study on a higher education institute.
Matura schools aim to promote Intelligence, personality development and health, together with individual study and working techniques, acquisition of knowledge and how to deal with information technologies, as well as skills in the fields of social ability, ethics, politics, science, communication, culture and aesthetics.
 
Curriculum
The curriculum for the Maturity schools of the EDK from 1994 comprises the fields of languages, humanities, social science and economic science, mathematics and natural science, visual arts and music, together with sport.
The share of language lessons is 30 to 40%, with mathematics and natural science allocated 20 to 30%, humanities, social science and economic science 10 to 20%, visual arts and music 5 to 10%. 15 to 25% must be used for the optional subjects, i.e. the in-depth subject (choice of eight subjects) and one supplementary subject as well as the Matura assignment.
Pupils attend lessons in seven core subjects, in one in-depth subject (choice of eight subjects) and one supplementary subject (choice of 13 subjects).

Measures to foster particular talents
The sponsoring of talented pupils is usually restricted to individual tuition, free selection of subjects, the permission to skip a class or for the special offers that are made in the fields of sport and music. There is a possibility to attend bilingual classes and to sit a bilingual Matura exam in more than 50% of the cantons.
