Vocational education: Who can attend?

Basically, students that have completed the lower secondary level can transfer without having to take an admittance exam. In practice, the company of employment usually select the trainees based on their performance at the lower secondary level, the subsequent application and job interview and possibly an aptitude test. Sometimes, the professional associations provide standardised tests for the selection of trainees.
Adults can also earn a certificate of basic vocational education.

Bridging courses
For adolescents who do not carry on with the vocational training or enter a full-time vocational school or a general-education school at the upper secondary level immediately after completing the lower secondary level, there are bridging courses that are offered for the transfer from the mandatory lower to the upper secondary level. There are different models - a combination of practical work in company and general education,, full-time school,  or bridging courses (tuition for foreign-language adolescents combined with practical work). They aim to support young people in their career decision and help them prepare for the vocational world by encouraging key skills and closing individual knowledge gaps.

Vocational Matura
An admission process decides on admittance to a vocational Matura course. The terms of admission and the acceptance process are regulated by the cantons.
