The primary level in figures
 
In the school year 2007 / 2008, primary school was attended by 445,136 pupils (49.2% girls). There are around 4300 schools. 2.8% of the pupils attended private, unsubsidised schools. The proportion of foreign pupils was 22.9%.
 
44,291 teachers (78.9% women) taught the 22,512 classes in 29,400 full-time positions. The average class size was 19.3.
The cantons specify the number of hours per week and per subject. In most cases, during the first 2 years of primary school, the weekly teaching time was between 21 and 25 lessons. From school years 3 to 6, the weekly teaching time was between 26 and 30 lessons (lesson duration usually 45 minutes).
