2.6. Pre-school level: What happens after completion?

After kindergarten (or the "école enfantine" and the "scuola dell'infanzia"), all children transfer to the first class of the primary level without having to take an exam (provided they are not kept back or attend a school with a special curriculum).
In more than half the cantons, projects aiming to improve the transfer from kindergarten to primary school are being carried out within the scope of school development or teacher education. The trend is toward making the age of entry into school more flexible. The cantons or the education bodies are currently carrying out school tests for the models of the basic or elementary levels in numerous school development projects. In two of the cantons the basic cycle already exists as an official model.
