Pre-school level: who can attend?

In most cases, enrolment in pre-school occurs at the age of 4 or 5, but may occur as early as the age of 3 (canton Ticino). There is no admission process for pre-school. Children are enrolled in pre-school once they have reached the specified age. Admission occurs on the basis of registration on the part of the parents or guardians. Children with special education needs or disabilities can also attend pre-school - whether in special institutions or ordinary pre-schools.

HarmoS
In cantons which have joined the inter-cantonal agreement on the harmonisation of compulsory education (HarmoS Concordat), pre-school is to become compulsory for all children who have turned 4 (cut-off date: 31 July), although later enrolment may be possible in individual cases if requested by the parents.
