The pre-school level in figures

151,699 children (48.6% girls) attended pre-school in the school year of 2007 / 2008. The proportion of foreign children was 26.5%. 9.4% of the children attended private, unsubsidised pre-schools. In the school year 2006 / 2007, there were 13,800 teachers (95.6% women; 8200 full-time equivalents) employed in around 5000 pre-schools. The average size of a pre-school class was 18.

Despite the fact that pre-school is not compulsory in all cantons to date, almost all children (98.7%) attended a pre-school. Most children (around 86%) attended pre-school for 2 years, while some attended for 3 years (primarily in the canton Ticino).
In the majority of cantons, fewer than 20 lessons per week were taught in the first kindergarten year; in the second kindergarten year, it was mostly 21 to 25 lessons.
