Universities: What happens after graduation?

In 2003, 49.3 % of the graduates of a university were successful in gaining employment within three months after graduation. One year after graduating from the university, the jobless quota was 6.1%.

Doctorate/PhD programmes, post-doctoral qualification for professorship (Habilitation)
A Master degree and the fulfilment of additional conditions are prerequisites for admission to a doctorate course.  A further possibility is to complete project-orientated research training according to a four year curriculum with a degree as PhD or a six year combined Residency/PhD programme. Those aspiring to an academic career (professorship) generally have to achieve a post-doctoral qualification (Habilitation) in a German-speaking region after the dissertation and therefore must complete a further scientific assignment - the post-doctoral thesis.

Post-graduate courses and advanced studies
Since 1990, all of the universities have been responsible for providing post-graduate studies and  advanced study courses. The advanced study courses ("Master of Advanced Studies", MAS) last at least one year (full-time course) and comprise academic achevements amounting to 60 ECTS points. The course fees must largely be borne by the participant.
