Universities in figures
 
Around 111,100 students were registered at universities in the winter semester 2004 / 2005, approx. 52 % of whom were male. Taking into account all universities, gender equality was achieved at the first and second levels (Bachelor, Master, Licentiate/Diploma) and among postgraduate students for the first time in 2004. 39 % of the students at doctorate level are women.
 
Degrees
In 2004 the Bachelor level numbered 21,989 students, the Master level 3982. The number of students participating in the normal Licentiate or Diploma studies sank from 74,333 in 2003 to 63,109 in 2004, due to the introduction of the Bachelor courses. 1057 Bachelor diplomas were awarded in 2004. The vast majority of degree holders (88 %) continued with the Master level studies immediately.

Student population
Approx. 22 % of the students at universities are foreigners - three quarters of them originate from Europe. The number of foreign students that have studied at the first and second study levels (Bachelor, Master, Licentiate/Diploma) was 16 %, with a much higher number at doctorate level (43 %).
New students constituted 18% of their age group in Switzerland in 2004. In 2003, the enrolment age in the universities was 21.7. 11.7 % of all 27-year-old Swiss residents , held a university degree in 2003.
