Specialised middle schools (Fachmittelschulen): What is taught?
![]() | Specialised middle schools (Fachmittelschulen) provide an extensive general education, encourage self confidence and social confidence and prepare the ground for vocational training in certain occupational fields. The teaching content of the specialised middle schools is based upon the curriculum of the EDK and the cantonal curricula. Specialised middle schools offer two types of subjects: general educational subjects and vocationally orientated subjects. |
General educational tuition
The general educational tuition consists of languages and communication, mathematics and natural science, social science, musical subjects and sport.
Vocational orientated subjects
Vocational orientated subjects teach vocational-specific basic knowledge and elements from specific occupational fields and prepares the student for the following occupations in particular: healthcare, social work, education, communication and information, design and arts, music and theatre.
Additionally, practical work (minimum period of two weeks) and a more specific, in-depth assignment relating to a certain theme are a compulsory part of the upper secondary level vocational education.
Specialised Matura (Fachmaturität)
The specialised Matura stipulates that practical work must be performed in selected vocational fields (duration: 12 to 40 weeks) or additional tuition or practical performances of at least 120 lessons (e.g. theatre, presentation, language courses) and the completion of a Maturity assignment in the selected vocational field.
