Specialised middle schools (Fachmittelschulen): Overview

Specialised middle schools (FMS) prepare pupils for higher vocational education (universities of applied sciences [FH]) in the fields of healthcare, social sectors, pedagogics, communication and information (applied linguistics), designand arts, music and theatre as well as applied psychology.
Curriculum
Specialised middle schools (Fachmittelschulen) make the preparations for higher vocational training (universities of applied sciences [FH]) in the fields of healthcare, social sectors, pedagogics, communication and information (applied linguistics), designand arts, music and theatre as well as applied psychology. The vocational training at Specialised middle schools up until the first achievements (upper secondary level Achievement) takes three years.
Specialised Matura (Fachmaturität)
An additional certificate (Fachmaturität) can be acquired through additional performance (practical work or through the attendance of additional classes).
Legal bases
The cantons are responsible for the specialised middle schools. The "Regulations on the recognition of certificates of upper secondary level schools" that were passed by the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education (EDK) on 12 June 2003 and the curricula for specialised middle schools of 9 September 2004 are the requirements for the recognition of inter-cantonal specialised middle schools (Fachmittelschulen).
