Vocational education: What requirements are set?

The performance of the trainees in the individual subjects of the vocational school is evaluated after each semester in the form of a report (1 = worst grade, 6 = best grade). The vocational schools contact the company of employment if the school performance or the attitude of the trainee is inadequate. The training officers in the company of employment issue an apprenticeship certificate every semester.
Individuals with learning difficulties have the possibility to attend support courses in addition to the normal tuition. During the basic vocational education with federal certificate, in particular, individual assistance may also be provided by a qualified individual.

Vocational Matura
Trainees on a vocational Matura programme receive a certificate at the end of every semester with the evaluation of their performance in each individual subject (1 = worst grade, 6 = best grade). The transition into the next semester is effected if the average of grades amounts to at least 4.0 and where at most two grades are not adequate.  If the performance is inadequate, a promotion to the next semester is effected on a provisional basis. Provisional status is only possible once during the vocational Matura programme.
With the more specific curriculum, an interdisciplinary project assignment is compulsory for the vocational Matura programme. The project assignment covers at least 40 lessons, which must be taken in at least two subjects. These have a concrete reference to professional/vocational situations and incorporate general social and cultural perspectives. The participating teachers evaluate the project work with grades. The grade either represents a part of the vocational Matura exam or represents part of the grade based on experience in the final exam for the vocational Matura.

Qualification
The two-year basic vocational education ends with a qualification process, normally a final examination. The acquired practical skills are given a lot of weight. Trainees with learning difficulties may apply for an easing of the terms of the final exam. A federal Ccertificate of qualification is thus acquired.
The basic vocational education that runs over three to four years is also completed with a qualification process, generally a final exam that leads to a federal certificate of vocational maturity. The vocational qualifications acquired during practical training are examined, together with the vocational education and general education. An individual practical assignment is a part of the final exam in a number of the vocational courses.

Certificates
Those who pass the vocational Matura exam and who possess a federal certificate of qualification receive a federal certificate of vocational maturity.
