Vocational education in figures
 
Around two thirds of adolescents in Switzerland complete some form of vocational education at upper secondary level. The predominant form is a vocational apprenticeship at a company or public institution. More adolescents attended a full time course (full-time school, training workshop) in Western Switzerland (2003: 30.6 %) and in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland (2003: 25.9 %) than in the German-speaking part of Switzerland (2003: 16.6 %).
 
210,000 adolescents completed a vocational education in the school year of 2003 / 2004. Frequently selected professions / professional fields are: business administration, sales, retail, cook, electrician (sorted according to their frequency).
The number of young women that completed a vocational training in 2003 was approx. 45 %. This is an increase in comparison to the year before. More and younger adults are now graduating with a vocational Matura (1995: 460, 2000: 6477, 2003: 9027, 2004: 9703). The vocational Matura system was introduced in 1994.
