Lower secondary level: What is taught?
 
In general, the lower secondary level should encourage the development and the formation of personality of the pupils, in keeping with their talents. It wants to strengthen self-responsibility and social skills. The lower secondary level prepares for adult life and life-long learning.
The cantons are responsible for the lower secondary level curricula.
 
Subjects
The following subjects are taught in all types of schools at lower secondary level:
 
Bullet pointOne national language (depending on the region, German, French, Italian or Romanic)
Bullet pointTwo foreign languages of which at least one of them is a national language (the pupils can be exempted from a foreign language in numerous cantons on the type of schools with basic demands)

Interdisciplinary tuition
In several cantons, the natural sciences, geography, history and civic education are taught under the collective concept of "Man and the Environment". Then there are fields that can be taught either as specific subjects or in an interdisciplinary fashion. These include environmental education, health, sex education, intercultural education, media education, information technology, preparation for selecting a profession, and traffic instruction.
