The primary level in figures
 
2003 / 2004 saw over 466,000 children (49.3 % of them girls) taught in more than 4500 primary schools. In 2003 / 2004 the number of teaching positions amounted to more than 24,700 in full time equivalents (29,500 teachers in all).  The teaching time per week amounts to 23 lessons per week in the primary classes. In the fifth or sixth primary classes, the pupils learn up to 32 lessons per week (one lesson lasts approx. 45 to 50 minutes).
